A Message From Our Founder
At Portages Health, our core belief is that we all have an infinite capacity for positive change when given the right support and when guided down the right path. We also believe that the mental health care delivery system has an infinite capacity for, yet also a tremendous need, for change.
We are in a crisis. Today, nearly 50% of youth and adults report struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or substance abuse. Yet only 1/2 of patients referred to mental healthcare professionals never get in to see them, and once they do get access, only about 1/3 get the right care that helps them actually get better. At Portages Health, we are committed to forge new paths, so all patients, providers and organizations can get better access to better care.
As a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist, and healthcare executive for well over 20 years, I have been committed to finding ways to improve access to mental health care while also seeking to improve the care delivered. I have had the honor and privilege to care for thousands of individual patients, often partnering with their families, schools, primary care providers, therapists and /or social workers, as we all worked together to transform lives. I have supported thousands of primary care and specialty care providers, psychiatrists, therapists, school administrators, teachers, and many other professionals as they strive to improve the lives of people they serve.
Through this effort, we have all contributed in some way to the tremendous Collaborative Care movement that has been underway for the past 20 years. The research has made it clear. Only through collaboration can we improve our delivery system, overcome our mental health crisis, and improve the lives of all patients grappling with depression, anxiety, substance abuse and other mental health conditions. Yet as the AMA called for in a groundbreaking report earlier this year, only through Technology-enabled Collaborative Care will we be able to achieve the efficiency and effectiveness of care that is needed.
Change, whether for individuals, organizations, or entire systems of care, especially when it involves technology, always seems really hard. But, imagine the following:
What if all healthcare providers and all organizations had a way to get better access and better care for all the people they serve with anxiety, depression, or substance abuse?
What if all patients had access to a mobile app that could easily identify exactly what they need to change at any moment in order to feel more happy, healthy and fulfilled.
What if the app could show all patients exactly what they needed to do and then it guided them through the steps to make these changes?
What if all patients were given the support they needed from their family and friends and healthcare providers?
What if this happened because their family, friends, and healthcare providers had access to technology that guided them in how to best be supportive and encouraging?
What if all patients and all healthcare providers could work as a collaborative team with mental health care providers and get easy access to specialized mental health care when needed?
What if the mental healthcare providers who treated each patient were guided by a sophisticated technology using the patients data, so that the best evidenced-based care matched to that patient’s current needs was delivered with scientific rigor at every point of care?
What if patients were, as a result of all of this, able to easily overcome stress, anxiety, depression, or substance abuse, become their best selves, and thrive?
Portages does all of this! I am thrilled to have the amazing team at Portages Health working with me to now bring to you the most efficient and effective mental health care solutions available, anywhere. At every point that care as usual has failed, we have solved for the structural causes, separating us from the ordinary.
Whether you are someone seeking care, a provider or organization seeking better access to better care for your people, or a mental healthcare professional seeking an exciting and meaningful new adventure, join us and let’s portage on, together!

Portages Health
“My journey with Portages started as a desperate search to correct my mental health. My only focus was on fixing my "problems" because that was all that I could see. Portages opened my eyes to a completely new path that I did not even know existed. It gave me direction and a clearer understanding of my whole self. It became my own accountability system, personal life coach, and allowed me to stay connected with my provider.
